Inspiration for new characters takes many forms, some you may not like and you shouldn't restrict. The fact that the "Bowsette" theme has gained a lot of traction in such a short span of time says a lot. Put that into context with the sheer number of different fanart versions of characters that are good and popular (like a lot of stuff found here), but don't get anywhere.
