I sort of feel like it's a 2D platformer thing, with Shantae and literal Metroidvania.

Who's to say she isn't one of the 5 DLC's? Just because a character has a Spirit, doesn't mean they're counted out. Male Wii Fit Trainer is a Spirit, yet he's a fighter(A genderwap but still a fighter nonetheless). A character is only counted out as a possible fighter if they are an Assist Trophy.

I think this is in reference to Simon and Samus being from the game franchises that defined the "Metroidvania"-genre and some of Shantae's games being sorta metroidvania-styled ones.
