Layered and has depth or one dimensional, evil and motivated by a crybaby? There are a lot of changes and decisions that are baffling but upgrading him from a monster of the week with no complexity is not one of them.

Making him canon and letting him be written by Toriyama was the best thing that could have happened for the character, he's finally been made a good character and not that crap from the non canon movies.

As someone with legitimate anger problems, I can say that more often than not people with explosive tempers like Broly end up hating themselves for it. In the heat of the moment, it all feels so justified, it doesn't feel like you're overreacting. You're set off by small things, and turned into a monster by big things, and when the heat dies down, you reflect on it and you realize just how much of an ass you are, and you loathe it. This Broly is a real person, I identify with him.
