These designs weren't terrible (well, Vergil's fedora was terrible, no excuse). The attitude is what was terrible.
If you sincerely think the designs were the problem, you're exactly the person that contributed to the absurd notion people didnt like this game "because dante's hair wasnt white". Nobody really cared that Dante didn't have dandruff colored hair, people cared that the ATTITUDE wasnt there. At least prior to the gane launch, then we discovered the gameplay had some gross misteps and the story was vomit inducing.
But before that? All we had to go on was how shitty the devs were treating fans, how utterly shitty Dante was acting, and black hair...
Of those 3 issues? Only the first 2 were ACTUALLY important.

The redesigns were equally terrible. Nothing about it screams Devil May Cry. Look what happened when Castlevania tried to Westernize the last two titles. It didn't work.
