I dont remember them ever saying they where girls in the anime. In the game and manga they where boys, the original japanese dialog in the anime hinted to them being boys but left them mostly androgynous most of the time.

I have not seen the english dubbed version but i would not be surprised if they switched them to girls. The english networks can be very narrow minded when they dub anime. I have seen them change names and genders of characters and alter dialog to write out gay characters before =S
