Fun fact: It actually takes anywhere from 6 to 72 hours for the sperm to make its way to the egg; conception never happens during copulation (unless it's one hell of a marathon session).
That's how the "morning after pill" works; it can't do anything to an embryo after conception, but during the time between when you have sex and when you become pregnant it can just... prevent that. Not 100% reliable, and it makes you feel like shit for a few days because it has to screw up your body chemistry to work, but an excellent fallback if things go wrong.
