The RAH-66 Comanche. What could have been.

It was a stealth and reconnaissance attack helicopter being tested in the 90s (hell it looks 90s and cool). Two were made. They have internal weapon bays for the missiles and rockets to reduce drag in flight and have a small radar cross section reading as well as being covered in radar absorbing material. It could carry additional weapons externally on the wings, the tail blade reduced heat signature by blwoing the jet engine heat sideways to confuse heat seekers. They also had new XM301 rotatory cannons made for their nose which were lighter versions of the M61 Vulcan.

So what happened? UAV drones were becoming good enough to be used as weapons and not just target practice. Sucks, I love stealth, I love the 90s and I like this thing.

it was also a decade behind schedule and costed over a billion.
but no, unmanned aircraft are what caused it to be scrapped
nothing else

The U.S. military kept changing the goal posts, at one point they even wanted it to have a drone of it's own, something the U.S. Air Force plans to give fighter jets in the future. But yes the program was plagued with issues (what one isn't?), the U.S. military changing the requirements, poor management of the company making it. But the thing is lots of weapons were were adopted a full decade after being made, because the U.S. military likes to twiddle it's thumbs before making a decision.

And even more programs straight up end with none of the weapons being chosen. Look at all the programs to replace the M16 and M4, none of the contestants won. The U.S. military either takes a scope or forgirp they like from one of the guns or nothing at all. Now that is the real waste of time and money, to have these programs and say never mind we don't want anything.

If the NGSW program doesn't end with any of the guns been picked to replace the M4 Carbine than at best they'll choose one of the new ammunition for lighter load outs for troops and at worst nothing at all.
