I find the whole U6 saiyans being all able to go Super Saiyan 2 thing way less nonsensical than Goten and Trunks. U6 saiyans are said to be stronger and more led by emotions (like a more evolved version of the saiyans) while Goten and Trunks should have followed the rule that the others followed. Well, in the Buu saga all main characters transformations were unlocked off-screen. Toriyama was tired.
