A: Magic, and B: It wasn't, but remember that while Yggdrasil players can only use Yggdrasil abilities (so far) the way some of those work is somewhat different and often more extensive in the new world.

So he could have actually just used a transformation spell, it's just that he couldn't use it in that manner in the game, while he can in the NW.
