Well they got a point, 20 years ago you didn't see nearly as much fan art of darker skin characters. Heck in the 90s most games and movies the lead was either a white man (sometimes lady) or in rarer cases an Asian guy if it was a martial arts movie or fighting game.
Even as a kid I noticed Liu Kang was one of the few main characters who was asian in movies and games. Turok was kind of an anomaly back then as well, native Americans were usually supporting characters and he was the main character of an FPS.
