Eh, was close enough to be marketed straight-out in Japan, up til volume 4 at least. Still has a pretty strong following there, just not strong enough for a dub anymore apparently.
And "Good" is subjective. Some people swear by it, others love to rip into it as the worst thing ever. Most of it's all up on Youtube if you wanted to give it a shot.

"So this is basically RWBY" is one of the best and up-to-date critiques boiled down into just under six minutes of hilarious sarcasm/satire.
I personally like the world and the prospects it has, the story writers just fly by the seats of their pants so poorly that you can *see* the flaws in the worldbuilding if you look into anything for more than twenty seconds.
Smut where weiss grows a dick after getting blasted by a dust explosion and fucks nearly everybody on her team has better character interactions than what is in the series nowadays; odd though, right now, Weiss has the most matured character out of all the cast members, essentially replacing Yang's "mama bear" role.

Unless you're a huge fan of the small handful of characters they're actually putting up on a pedestal(which is ironic), yes. Some horny fanfic writers take their worldbuilding more seriously than RoosterTeeth. And that's not even getting into the quarterly controversy that the studio gets into.
It's also great to watch if you like over the top fight scenes.
