The problem here is that most people, that don't know much about the series, think that Zelda is actually the main character.
This is because the authors usually use the name of the main character as the creation's name. Eg: Naruto, Ranma 1/2, Doraemon, Super Mario Bro., etc.

tl;dr: "Link" is the main character's name, "Zelda" is the princess he needs to (usually) save.
