Depending on the ammunition being used, a scope can actually make quite a bit of since on any shotgun. Slugs(single projectile rounds, much like standard ammunition for other weapons), especially combined with a rifled barrel, can make a shotgun a prime candidate for use with a scope. Such a shotgun could then be used for limited-range sniping operations.
Alternatively, depending on the type of 'scope'--or, more accurately, optical sight--being used, you can make good use of a 'scope' on a shotgun, regardless of the ammunition type. Acquiring a target with a "red-dot", "holographic", or "reflex" type optical sight is somewhat quicker and easier than using the weapon's iron sights, allowing you to react faster, giving you an advantage in close-quarters battle. Therefore, the combination of a "red-dot" sight on a shotgun firing buckshot ends up being a CQB powerhouse. Of course, this becomes even better if the shotgun is of a semi-automatic or fully-automatic, self-loading, magazine-fed type, like the Saiga 12, USAS-12, or AA-12.
