Sadly, this site seems woefully short on Drizzt pictures...

"Hey, you hear about that dark elf Drizzt Do'Urden? I hear he wields curved swords. CURVED. SWORDS."

If only I walked in his dreams, like he does mine.Soul mates separated by two worlds, the world of dreams, where he lives, and the world of reality, where I live.I know him,but he knows not me! *n* *n* *n*!!!

One of the things that I find very interesting about Drizzt,is that he is still a virgin. He has never been with a woman, elf or human. His own sister tries to rape him when he is a teenager, but he manages to get away from her. It's part of his high moral nature. He wants to save himself for his wedding night.I think it's wonderful that to spite everything he goes through,he holds out hope in finding someone who will love him in that way.Though I think intimacy scares Drizzt. He can take on the biggest, baddest monsters in the Realm, but the very though of having a personal relationship, frightens him more then his oldest sister,(She was exceeding mean and cruel to Drizzt from the day he was born. She wanted her mother to sacrifice him as soon as he was born. When their mother would not,she made sure she made Drizzt childhood a living Hell. She almost beat him to death once when he was only about six yrs old.), use to do,when he was a small child.

Drizzt is a Mary Sue. Completely and utterly. He's a Drow. He grew up in the Underdark. He grew up and was taught to be a Drow. And yet he is NOT one. Not in personality, not how he thinks, not anything. He's too perfect. He became too 'good' despite growing up in such an environment.

In fact! In Drow Culture! Drizzt would've been killed off very, very early with his actions and beliefs. A knife to the back. So easily. And yet? Didn't happen. He survived for no other reason then he's the Authors little bitchboy.

Actually, since he's a guy, he's a Gary Stu or Marty Stu.
But yes, you're right. He's a real poster boy for being too perfect for a setting.

I won't argue the 'too good' part, but if you actually read the books, Drizzt's survival fits perfectly into the Drow culture/society (and the point when he went too far and would no longer be valuable is the point when he fled the Underdark). The real question is whether you accept that 'passion' really makes Drizzt so much better as a fighter that he can get away with defeating others who have been killing for centuries.

That said, another aspect that fits into Drow culture and society: I'm fairly sure that Drizzt has the blessing of Lolth. She's a deity of chaos, after all, and Menzoberranzan had grown too stable and set in its ways -- until Drizzt came along, upsetting the schools, tearing down his own family's station, prompting a massive war and then infiltrating the most powerful house. I actually believe that he is an agent of Lolth, whether he worships her or not, given her blessing to continue sowing seeds of chaos among the drow.
