It's the G-Man effect. The point of choosing unattractive or otherwise non-noteworthy men in the artwork is to give a sense of "triumph". That any guy can snag hot women like this with a little effort (or a lot of back up). It's less a personal preference and more a promise that the "average" guy can do as he pleases.

I would say it is also a question of contrasting beauty (the women in this case) with ugliness (the bald fatasses).

By comparing them so directly, their hotness is much more apparent.
