Seeing this reminds me of when someone I knew explained why they're pronounced differently.
A Lieutenant (Lef-tenant) is named such because he's left with the tenancy of the men, in 'lieu' of the Captain.
A Lieutenant (Loo-tenant) is someone who's in Lieu to the captain, and a tenant of his command.

Might not be totally correct, but I'd love to see anyone argue with the Colonel that told me that.
