though the word of the manga is law for it is made of win, I too, always thought it was his hair and personally... two tone black / white hair is hot and kickass...

When it comes to the Specials manga wise, yes it is a hat. However keep in mind people, the manga is NOT canon with the games! So Brendan does have multi-colored hair in the games wearing a bandanna, not a hat. Ruby is only based on Brendan. So their two different characters. It has been proven to be his hair in the games, if you play Super Smash Bros. Brawl, one of Pikachu's alternate colours wears Brendan's bandanna. If it was a hat Pikachu would be wearing it. In every Pokemon generation the 2 main protagonists always wore some cap on their heads, but Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald was always the black-sheep out of the rest. Instead Brendan and May wore bandannas instead of the old traditional caps. (They were also the first to wear gloves if I may add.) So I hope that clears things up for everyone. Awesome picture btw!

It is a hat. If you look at the sprite or game art carefully you will see black hair under the green strap of the hat. SSBB is non-cannon to the Pokemon games, probably not from the same developr as well. Looking at the picture I would say not bad, but the legs were simply too skinny...
