The U.S., Russia, China, India and Japan among others want to put lasers or other types of energy-directed weapons on the 6th generation fighter jets. Science-Fiction is becoming science fact more and more every day.

I've said it on another picture but I love that the Falken opens up what looks like a mouth or bird beak to fire it's cannon, so it looks like a bird breathing a laser or "divine light of the gods" to smite it's enemy.

For now, yes. Against drones, missiles and small boats, but give it time. Second generation Directed-Energy Weapons will be made to be offensive. They already are thinking of arming helicopters with a powerful laser to destroy a high value target like a weapon stockpiles when it's an option. It'd be one U.S. dollar per shot which would be cheaper than dropping an expensive bomb or firing an expensive missile.

Keep in mind offensive energy weapons will not replace bullets, bombs and missiles but compliment them, as certain weather conditions can make energy weapons less effective.
