Funny thing, Loran was originally supposed to have been a girl but then the executives at Sunrise pulled the plug on that idea because they believed that nobody watching an anime about mecha could relate if the main protagonist was female.

Idiots at Sunrise never understood that anyone watching a mecha anime do so for the mecha, not for the pilots. Sure it helps if the pilots are interesting but that only goes so far. No, they could have a female protagonist, they just need to make her GAR enough.
