I think its bullshit the XM25 never got adopted. Even though they couldn't make the XM29 less heavy or bulky they clearly saw the potential of having an airburst grenade launcher firing smart rounds with a flatter trajectory. They pretty much took the grenade launcher part of the XM29 and made it its own thing. It did very well in the Middle East with U.S. forces loving it saying fights that normally would take half and hour ended in mere minutes. But those who wanted it to fail would look for any reason to make it fail. It wasn't any one thing either it was several stupid mismanagement issues by the ATK and H&K and one incident where a faulty round caused an XM25 to explode and cause minor injuries to the shooter (the cartridge propellant exploded, not the warheads themselves, safety measures did their job).
A real shame cause I think airburst grenade launchers could be very useful, rounds that explode in the air have better frag dispersion than rounds that hit the ground, and flatter trajectory means you can aim dead ahead instead of in an arch with traditional grenade launchers.
