Actually Birdo even in the manual for AMERICAN version of SMB2 is claimed to be a MALE character! No, American's DON'T have a thing against cross-dressing. In fact it isn't the Americans who get to decide what's in the game, it is the company Nintendo that does. When NINTENDO released the US version of Super Paper Mario it was THEY who decided the US version would be different, and released it with Vivian being female.

It was officially stated that line in paper mario was supposed to be a joke but it was taken seriously by mario in the game. also It is only the japanese game that had the joke. pretty much anywhere else, you will find vivian to be female. the word used in the game text to describe vivian was an insult version of the word male.
