Anon1: It's a hereditary scar. Sort of. Altair just had it. Ezio got it from getting hit by a rock. Desmond seemed to have been born with it.

Actually, Anon1, you're kinda wrong on both points. OnAChair isn't an anon. Secondly it's not hereditary, it just seems to be a common theme for all of Desmond Miles' bloodline. Altair and Desmond are both shown at around 25-ish, Ezio in his late teens. Yet all wind up getting the same sort of facial scar somehow. Altair's a highly-trained assassin, so no hard guessing there. Desmond is/was a bartender, take a wild guess. And we all saw Ezio do a good rock-block with his face.

I assumed Desmond's scar was from the bleeding effect... granted it's been a long time since I played the first or second assassin's creed but yeah
