It was fight or die, win or lose their nation. If you did surrender, you could expect to live hated and treated as subhuman by the servants of the enemy; or worse, be captured by the Soviets. The Soviets did unimaginable things to those they captured. So again, fight or die.

The Red Army literally raped the people in concentration camps after forcing the Nazi's to flee and they gang raped Hitler's food tester. They were no savior. There's a reason why we kind of skim over the fact Russia helped end WW2. To this day rape is still part of the Russian military's doctrine. They don't frown upon it and even worse encourage it.
