Why is reflection upsidedown?

The image taken into the eye is flipped upside down by the lens before reaching the retina.
I suppose to artist figured the reflection would be off the retina, for some reason, or just heard that somewhere and forgot what it was referring to.

Anyway, still shouldn't happen for any number of reasons.

For one thing, if it was a reflection off the retina (which doesn't happen anyway), the image would be seen only in the pupil, the hole leading to the retina, and not across the whole cornea.

For another thing, even in the real world, reflections in eyes (which aren't nearly so mirror-like and sharp [anime corneas are already so glass-like it's crazy even before this kind of thing starts getting thrown in...]) are reflecting off the wet surface of the cornea, not the retina. The retina isn't even built that way for reflections to be a thing you could get.

Also, even if it were reflecting off the retina and not the cornea, and the iris were transparent and whatnot, and all that were actually possible, the image would be passing BACK through the lens again on the way out and be flipped back to right side up.

tl;dr not only is this a case of Did Not Do The Research, it's the worst kind of those cases where the artist thought the research had been done.

Oh yeah, by the way, the positioning would be way off even if it weren't upside down (which the upside down thing I've seen repeated in quite a few such images as it is).

@Xerblade my only question is why do you know this? Not that im saying its anything negative about your comment... but is it part of your studies for school or something? Or just randomly accumulated knowledge?
