Actually that's not true as you can tell, generally, which is male and which is female.
Female spotted hyenas are a good bit larger in size to the males all around. As well, the hierarchy in spotted hyena clans (that is the actual term for a pack) has the female hyenas on top with the matriarch being the big mama and leader. Even the lowest female hyena is higher on the social order than even the alpha male of the clan.
Another interesting fact; They are completely unrelated to dogs and are in actuality more closely related to mongooses.
