It's safe to assume that the SSB fandom has their own canon completely separate from the original series. This couple wouldn't work back in their own canon (even for reasons other than the obvious "taking place in different universes" issue), but in a crossover series ripped from their original stories? Sure, why the fuck not? No one's claiming this couple is official or anything.
