This metaphor of a nosebleed for an erection gets blown WAY out of proportions at times... one can't help but wonder if the males in Japan have some kind of crossed wires... or crossed blood vessels as case may be

It isn't quite a metaphor for an erection. It's meant to represent the increased heart rate, and from that, blood pressure, that results from sexual excitement.

You KNOW, I hope HOW an erection in human males works, right? We do not have the penis bone almost all other animals in this world can boast about (filthy bastards). We only MUST count on re-routing blood... there. You say it's for more general increased heart rate and blood pressure too... this begs the question: how many times do you see an anime character having a nosebleed after a run, or other physical exertion?

It is a metaphor, and it's used only when sexual excitement comes into play, SO... two plus two makes four, where I live.
