This! Is what I've wanted 0080 to end at. Sadly that's not the case, Bernard was one of my favorite characters in the Gundam franchise and 0080 is one of the best Gundam series I've ever watched.

In the novel version (or so I've read about it, anyway), Bernie is hinted to have survived; from Gundam Wikia:

"He survives the destruction of his Zaku II Kai in the War in the Pocket novelization, it is mentioned that "the pilot miraculously survived" while Al's father is reading a newspaper."
