One of the best story changes in the manga was making Zelda and Midna childhood friends. Communicating through a water pool's reflection rather than the big twilight mirror. Their respective royal attendants fear each princess might corrupt the other, so they seal the vector. Zelda feels guilty about never saying goodbye which prompts her sacrifice in the middle of the game.
