He also had a hammer in A Link to the Past. And NeoHippy, what are you talking about? The only items shown here that become useless after a boss is maybe the silver arrows. You use the hammer in several Zelda games to smash boulders in your way (Zelda 2) and pound the pegs blocking your path in a link to the past. The boomerang is very useful in the 2d games to stun enemies, the bombs open passageways, the raft helps you get to heart pieces and a dungeon, the candle helps in dark caves, or dungeon rooms, and the ladder helps you get across rivers of water or lava. And the other items should be obvious.
