Ever consider it could still be nunchuks, just with a longer chain? Also the little one is supposed to be a metaphor for their mutation. Splinter probably looks like a rat you'd fin in Mexico, all big hairy, and reminds you to much of your mother in-law.

Looking at the pillar weight in Mike's right hand (his left) I would say its a kusari gama. Defanantly a step up from nunchucks and most certainly not long chained ones either.
