Well, Gardevoir and Lopunny are two thirds of Team Charm in the Mystery Dungeon games, but the third member is a Medicham. Mawile may well have been a replacement done by some fan and it just caught on from there, reaching memetic status.

In the third gen, Gardevoir-Mawile pairings were common. When Lopunny came around, it seemed a natural addition to the group. I imagined that Gothorita would have joined them by now.
