Technically, they're not related (although they're distant cousins in Girlfriend of Steel). Since Rei is a clone—and thus, genetic "sister"—of Yui, one could argue that makes her Shinji's aunt.

*shaking my head* She's not a cousin or aunt. She is a clone based on the physical template of his mother, BUT she is cloned from Lilith the 2nd Angel. So no, the incest tag does not apply to what is ultimately the flesh of a divine creature.

The controversy should be more like, "So if our creator had a human form, and you made out with it, what then?"

#1526042 you're partially right and wrong at the same time. In order for Rei to be given the features of Shinji's later mother Yui,DNA of her and thus her blood would be required for that to occur.

Therefore in layman term it IS still technically incest but not 100% due to Lilith's essence. But I do agree that the incest tag for Shini/Rei explicit images do not apply.

However there is something else I do want to bring while on the subject of sleeping with a clone of your mother.

How is it that Rei/Shinji doesn't get quite the huge negative backlash I often see when compared to Devil May Cry's Dante/Trish when paired up. For those that do not know what I am talking about, as with Rei Ayanami,Trish is a clone of Dante's late mother Eva with her appearance except she was made by a devil king.
