I dunno, I like this better as a goblin trait idea. Halflings seem like a more stable, self actualized race. I wouldn't put them down as a race that shapeshifts just by proximity to other races.

Right? Halflings are like-hobbits-but, and hobbits are bucolic aesthetes. Malleability is the opposite of their timeless rural farm-town vibe. They represent places so static that villages a mile apart have separate accents because of rivalries that started on vellum.
Anyway the fun answer is that this hobbit hung out with all the cute girls he was into.
