Not sure whether that was sarcasm or not, but Son Goku is merely the Japanese version of the 'Monkey King' from the Chinese story 'A Journey to the West'.
And yes, the one from Dragonball (Z/GT) is/was based on that character, flying nimbus cloud, monkey-attributes, and expanding staff included.
That is neither here nor there, as for the beasts:
Ichibi - Tanuki (Racoon-dog), popular Japanese folklore
Nibi - Nekomata (Fork-tailed Cat), also relatively well-known in Japanese Folklore
Sanbi - This is something Kishimoto just threw together, a shrimp-tailed, crab-like turtle demon...
Yonbi - Just a more beastly, four-tailed version of the Son Goku that I mentioned earlier
Gobi - Another Kishimoto creation, it is /supposed/ to be a Dolphin-horse hybrid demon... looks nothing like a dolphin and barely like a horse to me, but hey, whatever, it's a demon...
Rokubi - What can I say, it's a 6-tailed slug... -shrugs-
Nanabi - 6-winged, 1-tailed (not really 7-tailed...) Kabutomushi (Rhinoceros Beetle), sorta...
Hachibi - 8-tailed Ushioni or Ox Ogre, another semi-common Japanese folklore demon, ox-headed sea animal of some sort, in this case an octopus, since it has 8 tails (tentacles?)
Kyuubi - 9-tailed demon fox, based on the Japanese folklore that if a fox lives long enough (not sure of the duration) it will gain a tail, up to 9, and gain certain abilities...
Okay, I'm going to just go to sleep now...
