The old one says "whomever they gaze at to harden like stone." this one says "whomever they make eye contact with to harden like stone."
Small difference but a difference all the same.

Just a thought but wouldn't "Gorgon" be a more suitable name? I mean Medusa herself is one specific Gorgon

No, medusa is the proper term. Because a gorgon can be either the kind you think of when you think of Medusa, or a scaly, bull-like creature. Calling her a medusa is more accurate.
