Roots of trees are notorious for cracking open concrete and moving into peoples basements and water mains. Even weeds and crack most common outdoor tile if given time to grow.

Bamboo, when not given an alternative way to grow can and will dig through a human body with no problems.

There is some bamboo that grows a foot a day.

I fully expect this to be a torture method in asian countries. They were quite ingenious when it comes to using the land's fruits for such things.
