I don't think it's ever straight up said in the English version, but it's definitely clearer in the Replicant version.

Due to cultural differences, it was not brought up in the English version of Gestalt. But in Replicant, you learn that she was born a Hermaphrodite and therefore shunned by the village as a freak.
The only line in Gestalt that alludes to this is when the bully asks why she tries to look like a girl.
