I agree with #660917...I seem to recall that dot hack, at least //sign, was developed by Bee Train as far as anime goes...Gainax had nothing to do with it...
However, you may be interested to know, Sakido, that Gainax was involved in the earlier Neon Genesis Evangelion, and the later Panty & Stocking With Garterbelt.
Also worth noting is the possible resemblance of Yume Nikki's Uboa to the Lord Anti-Spiral.
