In all likelihood, this is an artistic error. Katanas were sheathed blade-up, with the scabbard tucked through the belt.
Other Japanese swords like the tachi were sheathed blade-down, as depicted here. However, the tachi was hung from the belt, not looped through it.
Error aside, it is still a nice picture.
