He totally didn't ditch his family. Except for that year in space. And then when they wanted to his him back after Cell, he refused and decided to stay dead. And then the end of Z he ditched his family to go train Uub.

^ goku stayed in space to learn to control super saiyan, he stayed dead for 7 years to bring peace and at the end of z he spent10 years home BEFORE he left to train uub also he can teleport home at anytime
