Ryu's shoes and Ken's bracelets were obvious hindrances, which is why Ryu got rid of his shoes and Ken started wearing gloves instead.

It's actually pretty strange how they don't change much over the years. I guess they don't need to, but compared to a lot of fighting games (LOOKIN' AT YOU SOUL CALIBUR), it's a pleasant surprise.
