Kos Mos was actually partially designed by Shion's now-dead husband/boyfriend.

And yes, her ultimate attack did involve her almost literally splitting her abdomen open like that before launching a volley of laser shots. It proved to be strong enough to clear most random encounters, even at the later stages, provided you weren't like ten or more levels too low.
