Minmay (robotech)= bimbo
Minmay (Original Macross)= ... well, still a bit of a ditzy bimbo, but at least that version can sing. Hell, the voice actess that played her (and reprised her role in the U.S. release of the actual 'Macross') not only got her start on this character, but really set the whole 'idol singer' thing in motion. In some respects, if there was no Mari Iijima there probably would have been no Megumi Hayashibara or Utada Hikaru.

... of course, if you dislike those to as well as the rest, then I guess that fact makes no difference in the end.

Still the fact remains: Japanese Minmay could actually carry a tune in a bucket.
