The Japanese toilets like that are actually not only healthier because you're not sharing germs of other people, you use your foot to step on the flush lever, but also because when you squat it's much easier on your bladder.
I forget the details but it isn't exactly healthy for your body to relieve itself while 'sitting' like on a chair.
The only reason we have toilets like that is because the Kings in old times had thrones that were essentially toilets so they could go about daily work without using a bed chamber pot. It's just become the standard over a very long time for westerners and is becoming more and more common in Japan due to the conveniences that come with it, such as the bidet.
