testtype01 he IS indeed an android. You could see him being programmed and using the robotic talk that shirow represents as barcodes (which isn't exclusive to robots, on the other hand). You can also see how he is hacked by Gaia to protect her plans and how he is repurposed for less violent tasks like... well, the one we see here.
