One Piece's, when he said that, the officers he commanded to do that looked at him like "What the hell?!" right after. Some made philosophical sense, like memories or men live for today and such. Some others, were just... well, I agree to an extent. It's an overused statement.

The Death Note one makes sense when put into context: Matsuda (who L is talking to) discovered the guys using the "new" Kira to increase their company's stocks, making him #1 on their shit list, so he invites them to have a drink while pretending to push Misa as an idol that he wants them to sponsor. After L says this, he pretends to drunkenly show off on a balcony hand rail, slips, and falls to his "death" (actually a mattress on the balcony the floor below while someone else impersonates him on the ground), making the corporate dudes think he's dead, so they can't kill him.
